Mayers Healthcare Foundation to Offer Mammogram Screenings at Health and Wellness Fair

Are you due for a mammogram? Mayers Healthcare Foundation invites you to make your appointment for June 22, 2024, at the Health and Wellness Fair hosted at the Inter-Mountain Fairgrounds in McArthur.

The Health and Wellness Fair will feature an onsite mobile screening event from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, providing convenient access to mammogram screenings for women in the community. Insurance will be accepted, and for those without insurance, there is a potential opportunity to receive free screenings courtesy of California's Cancer Detection Program - Every Woman Counts (CDP-EWC) Department of Healthcare Services. To qualify for free screenings, individuals must be over 40 years old, have a low household income, and have no insurance.

Early detection of breast cancer is crucial for successful treatment and prevention of deaths from the disease. Breast cancers found early are easier to treat, leading to better outcomes for patients. Regular screening tests are the most reliable way to detect breast cancer early.

Screening tests are exams used to find diseases in people who do not have any symptoms. For breast cancer, screening tests aim to find it early, before it causes symptoms such as a palpable lump. Early detection increases the likelihood of successful treatment, as smaller tumors are more manageable and less likely to have spread outside the breast.

The American Cancer Society provides guidelines for breast cancer screening for women at average risk:

Women between 40 and 44 have the option to start screening with a mammogram every year.
Women 45 to 54 should get mammograms every year.
Women 55 and older can switch to a mammogram every other year, or they can continue yearly
mammograms.

It is important for all women to understand what to expect when getting a mammogram for breast cancer screening, including what the test can and cannot do. Clinical breast exams are not recommended for breast cancer screening among average-risk women at any age.

Mayers is committed to promoting proactive health measures and ensuring access to essential screenings for our community," said Kimberly Westlund, Manager of the Mayers Rural Health Clinic. "We encourage all eligible individuals to take advantage of this opportunity for potentially life-saving mammogram screenings."
